In 16 century, Leonard
Davinchi introduced concept of steel chain in his sketch.
French engineer materialized his idea on 1832 as GalΥs
bicycle chain.
Hans Renold developed current popular steel roller chain
in 1880. |

|
The following information is required to select
the chain;
- Power to be transmitted (kw)
- Driving shaft and driven shaft speed and shaft
diameters.
- Center distance between driving shaft and driven
shaft.
|
|
|
- Power transmission chain: Under 150m per minute.
- Small pitch conveyor chain: 10-30m per minute.
- Large pitch conveyor chain: 10-30m per minute.
- Precision conveyor chain: Under 50m per minute.
- Top chain: 5-10m per minute.
|
|
|
- Periodical inspection (at least once a month.
Increase inspection for sever application)
- Inspection under operation (abnormal noise, vibration,
chain stiffness, sprocket engagement, lubrication)
- Inspection after operation (condition of connecting
link, clip and cotter pin, chain slack, parts deformation
or excess wear, etc.)
|
|
|
Main purpose is to reduce
friction between chain pin and bushing and extend chain
life.
Cooling, sealing and rust prevention. |

The lubrication oil must
be applied before this happens. Do not use grease to
lubricate your chain, since it takers a too long for
grease to reach the clearances between pins and bushing
s at room temperature. |
|
|
- Chain is excessively tensioned or slackened.
- Incorrect alignment of sprockets
- Improper lubrication.
|
|
|
- Chain is too slack
- Uneven wear elongation

- SUS 300 series: Better viscously because of higher
Nickel contents. Excellent anti-corrosion performance.
Less wear and strength performance.
- SUS 430 series: Economical. Less anti-corrosion
performance than SUS300 series.
- SUS 403 series: Increase hardness by heat treatment.
Less anti-corrosion performance because carbon contains.
Better wear resistance and strength performance.
- SUS 600 series: Best strength performance. Better
wear resistance and anti-corrosion performance than
SUS304 series.

The following information
is required;
- Chain number and number of strands
- Type of sprockets
- Shaft hole diameter
- Number of teeth
- Boss diameter and length
- Whether the tooth heads are hardened
|
|
|
In general, sprocket life
is several times longer than chain life. However if
the teeth are worn because of insufficient lubrication
or damaged due to a shock load, the sprockets must be
replaced immediately. |
